The World Reacts to Trump's Military Threat Against Venezuela

The top USA diplomat in Venezuela has arrived to hear what is likely to be a stinging rebuke to President Donald Trump's talk of a possible "military option" to resolve the country's political crisis.

Arreaza called Trump the "boss of the empire" and said his comments fit a pattern of aggression against Venezuelan sovereignty and violate global law and the United Nations charter.

"There is an extremist elite in the U.S. government", he added, "and I really don't know what is happening and what will happen in the world".

Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz: Reiterating all of the terms of the Lima Declaration on Venezuela, the government of Chile rejects the threat of military intervention in Venezuela.

Global safe-haven trades jump on escalating North Korea tensions
The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index fell 143.08 points to 15,074.25, with almost all of its sectors moving lower. Benchmark 10-year notes last rose 5/32 in price to yield 2.2255 percent, from 2.242 percent late on Wednesday.

The White House has condemned President Nicolás Maduro's regime for human rights abuses.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo said Trump, by raising the prospect of possible military action, was trying "to give the Venezuelan people hope and opportunity to create a situation where democracy can be restored".

The response came in a statement read Saturday by Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza in a meeting with foreign diplomats.

"The repudiation of violence and any option involving the use of force is unavoidable and constitutes the fundamental basis of democratic coexistence, both internally and in global relations".

"All measures should be peaceful and respect the sovereignty of Venezuela", a statement from Colombia's foreign ministry said.

Latin American support for Venezuela against the USA threat comes on the eve of Vice President Mike Pence's trip to the region beginning Sunday.

President Nicolas Maduro's socialist administration has been under siege at home and overseas after more than four months of anti-government protests in which 120 people died.

"I think Pence's problem is that he is going to come to Latin America and people are going to ask him, 'Are you speaking on behalf of President Trump, are you speaking on behalf of the USA government?"

Simon Rimmer is confirmed as the seventh celebrity for Strictly Come Dancing
The BBC programme's official Twitter page also announced the news with the northerner revealing he is a "HUUUUGE" fan of the show. Aside from his TV commitments, Simon is a chef and owner of nine restaurants in North West England, and one in Dubai.

"So, I dont think he has enough political clout to exert any kind of influence in Latin America". Although the Venezuelan military is obviously no match for the American one, it is far from a pushover and if it resisted an invasion, the ensuing conflict "especially in densely-populated Caracas, would undoubtedly lead to a catastrophic loss of innocent lives". "What I think Pence wants to do is shore up support to remove Maduro through other means".
