The event was the first-ever Asia-Oceania joint Continental Championship with 16 teams, including Australia and New Zealand.

With New Zealand also in foul trouble at times and losing Ili in the second half, they were never a great chance to come back after falling behind by 20 so early in the piece.

Iran's Hamed Haddadi, who was voted the most valuable player of the tournament, scored 18 points in the final with Arsalan Kazemi adding nine points and 10 rebounds.

Sydney Kings star Brad Newley saved his best game for the final with 18 points, a lot of them in the first half when the game was there to be won, while Brisbane Bullets forward Daniel Kickert added 14 points and Adelaide 36ers star Mitch Creek capped off an outstanding campaign with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Eden Hazard and Tiemoue Bakayoko give Chelsea boost
The Telegraph's Matt Law has reported that Tiemoue Bakayoko and Eden Hazard have an outside chance of making it to the squad. Bakayoko also posted about his return to training on Instagram.

Australia, made up of NBL players with overseas-based players unavailable, went through the Asia Cup undefeated.

They did it without star big man David Anderson, with the four-time Olympian sustaining a shoulder injury in a lead-up game. Iran, however, managed to widen the gap in the dying minutes to come out victorious in the quarter 30-20, and find a way in the title game.

Despite their dominance, no Boomers were named in the tournament's All-Star five.

The Boomers' focus now turns to the FIBA Asian World Cup qualifiers which begin this November.

The organizers of Free speech rally earlier distanced themselves from any white supremacist and Neo-Nazi group or ideology. Around 20 participants were escorted out of the park by Boston police to the cheers of counter-demonstrators.

"We had a frustrating Olympic campaign in 2016 but looking forward to moving forward with the group to see what we can get done", Lemanis said.

"Come World Cup year in 2019, the reality is not every National Basketball Association player will be available".

Australia will now move onto the final and play either Iran or Korea, while New Zealand will play the loser of that match in the third-place play-off.
