An 11-year-old girl is in a serious condition after being shot in the face in Tasmania.

Initial investigations suggest the girl was inside a vehicle when it was shot at.

She was flown to Melbourne's Royal Children Hospital overnight in a critical condition after the shooting at Deloraine, near Launceston, and has since improved to stable.

Police were called to the Deloraine Medical Centre at 9.10pm where the girl was being treated.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing but police believe it was sparked by an earlier argument between the girl's mother and another woman at a supermarket.

A 25-year-old family member of the girl was arrested by Launceston police and is assisting them with inquiries.

The man is in police custody but has not been formally interviewed, police said.

Some neighbours told The Examiner they did not hear gunshots but heard "a heap of yelling", before police swarmed the area.

Police are expected to reveal more details of the incidents at a press conference on Wednesday morning.
