Battery mode, intended for short trips within the electric-only driving range, disables the fuel-cell system altogether and runs the auto completely on battery power.

The basis for the EQA is a new electric vehicle platform developed by Mercedes for use in all the EQ models. The menus and indicators on the displays are geared to the functionality of the combined fuel cell and battery-electric powertrain.

Much of Mercedes efforts have focused on straight battery-electrics, the automaker is looking at other zero-emission alternatives. The expected range from this auto is 437 km and that's quite a breakthrough we feel in terms of technology.

Alongside its headline-grabbing Project One hypercar, Mercedes has shown off the EQA, a compact all-electric hatchback which is an obvious preview of the next-generation A-Class, as well as an expansion of the battery-powered EQ model range.

The GLC F-Cell's hydrogen tanks store 9.7 pounds of hydrogen, enough for approximately 270 miles of range in the relatively lenient European cycle. Between now and 2022, Daimler intends to bring out ten battery-electric vehicles, globally, with the GLC F-CELL representing an important landmark.

"Our many years of experience with fuel-cell technology pay dividends in the new GLC F- Cell: its long electric range, short refueling times and everyday practicality of an SUV will make it the ideal vehicle", said Ola Källenius, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

The GLC F-Cell features all of the driving and safety technologies available in Mercedes line-up.

"This is made possible by the compact construction of our fuel-cell system".

The new model is really an upgraded version of Daimler's B-Class F-Cell, which has been on the market since 2010. F-Cell mode uses the hydrogen supply to maintain a state of charge in the battery pack in case the driver wants to reserve the electric range for later. Another big step forward has been a 90-percent reduction in the amount of platinum Mercedes-Benz needs in its fuel cell, which lowers its production costs enormously.

Finally, you'll notice Mercedes' regular controller wheel for the infotainment system has been replaced by a multifunction touchpad with handwriting recognition. There's a Sport mode for faster driving and a Charge mode that uses all of its regenerative braking capacity and its fuel cell to recharge the lithium-ion battery. The EVA platform supports a wide range of packaging including front, rear or all-wheel-drive, and enables the EQ ranbge to be built on the same production lines as conventional Mercedes cars.

ECO is optimized for low consumption.
