Aid agencies must step up 'massively' to help Rohingya Muslims

Myanmar's de facto leader and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi will not attend the upcoming UN General Assembly session in NY as criticism of her handling of the Rohingya crisis grows.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize victor, is facing global outcry over Myanmar security forces' fierce response to a series of Rohingya militant attacks in the western state of Rakhine.

Ms Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who lived under house arrest for many years under a junta that ultimately gave way to an elected government, faces worldwide criticism and pressure.

A spokesperson for Mrs Suu Kyi told Reuters: "She is trying to control the security situation, to have internal peace and stability, and to prevent the spread of communal conflict".

The Centre has said that illegal immigrants like Rohingyas pose grave security challenges as they could be recruited by terror groups and directed states to identify them and subsequently deport them.

In a release, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the flights that landed yesterday carried shelter materials, sleeping mats, almost 2,000 family tents, and other emergency supplies for a refugee camp in Cox's Bazar district in the country's southeast. What are the crimes of the women, children, the innocent people?

About 32,000 registered refugees live in the two official camps, but more than 300,000 undocumented Rohingyas were also estimated to be in Bangladesh before this latest influx. Socially, economically and politically marginalised, the Rohingya, unlike other ethnic minorities, are not categorised as citizens of Myanmar. But the scale of the violence suggests-as do the Rohingya themselves-that this may well be an organized government plan to wipe out the Muslim minority, which has shared an uncomfortable relationship with Myanmar's Buddhist-majority for decades.

Myanmar's military, however, says it is fighting Rohingya militants and has denied reports that it is targeting civilians.

"People are walking for days escaping what can only be described as widespread and systematic abuses", she said.

The ongoing actions of Myanmar's armed forces, which are believed to have intensified following the August attacks, are a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing," United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said Monday.

Hasina's comments came after the Parliament Monday passed a resolution denouncing Myanmar for the atrocities and called upon the global community to mount intensified pressure on Naypyidaw to stop the atrocities and take back the refugees.

In addition to the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya's who have fled Myanmar, thousands of homes and whole Rohingya villages have been burned down.

Cruz's account favorited the video early Tuesday morning, and by Tuesday night, late-night hosts already had their jokes ready. Cruz has attributed the fiasco to an inadvertent "staffing issue," saying "it was a mistake".

Myanmar's forces have been attacking Rohingya Muslims and torching their villages in Rakhine State since October 2016.

The National editorial went on to say that the Myanmar military is "engaged in an indiscriminate assault designed explicitly to bleach the country of its Muslim Rohingya minority population by driving them into neighbouring Bangladesh".

The government has warned of bomb attacks in cities and those concerns are likely to be compounded by an al Qaeda call to arms in support of the Rohingya.

Violence broke out on August 25, after Rohingya fighters attacked police posts, prompting a military crackdown.
