Under scrutiny, Kaspersky Lab considers changes to US subsidiary

Michael Flynn, President Trump's former national security adviser, was paid $11,250 for a 2015 speaking engagement in Washington for Kaspersky Government Security Solutions Inc., a US subsidiary of Kaspersky Lab. Flynn was sacked by the Trump administration in February after providing misleading statements about his contacts with Russian officials.

DHS will also be offering Kaspersky Labs the opportunity to submit a written response to the concerns raised by the directive to provide any evidence, materials, or data that may be relevant.

The US Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday ordered all federal agencies to stop using software produced by Kaspersky Lab, a Russia-based computer security company with its US headquarters in Woburn.

Agencies have 30 days to identify Kaspersky products on the IT systems, 60 days to develop a plan for removal, and 90 days to discontinue using the products. "The only conclusion seems to be that Kaspersky Lab, a private company, is caught in the middle of a geopolitical fight, and it's being treated unfairly even though the company has never helped, nor will help, any government in the world with its cyberespionage or offensive cyber efforts".

On Barbuda , nearly every building was damaged when the hurricane's core crossed almost directly over the island early Wednesday. With petrol running out and tensions rising, the Florida Highway Patrol escorted tanker trucks sent to replenish gas stations.

"Kaspersky Lab has good relationships and regularly helps law enforcement agencies all over the world fight cybercrime, and we hope the USA will also consider learning more about us, and who we truly are, versus the rhetoric and false assumptions", wrote Kaspersky. The Department is concerned about the ties between certain Kaspersky officials and Russian intelligence and other government agencies, and requirements under Russian law that allow Russian intelligence agencies to request or compel assistance from Kaspersky and to intercept communications transiting Russian networks.

The U.S. Senate is voting this week on a defense policy spending bill that includes language that would ban Kaspersky Lab products from being used by U.S. government agencies.

Kaspersky Lab said that the facts of the emails have been "misconstrued to fit in with the hypothetical, false theory".

Kaspersky has repeatedly denied that it has ties to any government and said it would not help any government with cyber espionage.

At the time, the company's CEO, Eugene Kaspersky, who attended a KGB-sponsored school, described the fears about the company's ties to the Kremlin as "total BS" and "unfounded conspiracy theories".

As ABC News previously reported, the FBI launched a counterintelligence investigation of Kaspersky Lab several years ago, and the agency has recently been taking new steps to assess Kaspersky Lab's relationship with Russian intelligence services, including interviewing company employees based in the United States.

When the GSA announced its July decision, it underscored that its mission was to "ensure the integrity and security of USA government systems and networks" and that Kaspersky was delisted "after review and careful consideration".

In a Tuesday statement, Kaspersky said it was "exploring opportunities to better optimize" the D.C. office.
