Fewer South Georgia residents without power Wednesday morning

As the metro area wakes up after Irma, many are without power. Collectively, Georgia's customer-owned EMCs provide electricity and related services to 4.4 million people, almost half of Georgia's population, across 73 percent of the state's land area. And by early Tuesday evening, the lights were back on for well over half a million customers. Many people have been without power since yesterday. Within a 12 hour period the number of customers without power dipped from 870,000 to 574,359.

As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, Georgia Power reported almost 345,000 of its customers were still affected. The highest number of outages Monday in Harris County was 5,715.

There were about 22,000 Houston properties without power Monday.

According to the press release, EMCs began preparations for Hurricane Irma more than a week ago and have participated in daily discussions with co-ops from across the country to arrange for extra crews, trucks and equipment.

Georgia EMC is the statewide trade association representing the state's 41 EMCs, Oglethorpe Power Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. and Georgia System Operations Corp. That's down from a combined 2 million outages at the height of the storm.

Also, Georgia electric membership cooperative figures at 4 p.m. Tuesday show 68,870 outages in a region that includes Middle Georgia and extends west to Columbus.

Georgia EMCs reported 236,000 of their customers were without power. Georgia EMC utilities brought in 3,000 crew members from 13 states to help out.

Carlson says the Vermonters will help Georgia Power restore power and set new poles and make repairs to downed lines and broken poles.

"EMCs stress that damage from Irma is a historic outage event in Georgia and it will take days to completely replace or fix power lines and power poles in every corner of the state", the statement said.
