FPL says power restoration will be slow, but steady

Local Utility Crews Work to Restore Power in Florida

All 10 FirstEnergy utility companies from Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland have sent about 900 linemen, damage assessors, electrical contractors, foresters and support personnel to Florida to help utilities in Florida with restoration efforts following expected power outages from Hurricane Irma.

Power should be back on throughout South Florida by the end of the weekend, Florida Power & Light promised Tuesday morning.

The two - among the thousands of power-line workers brought in from out-of-state by major utilities - spent about five minutes outside a house in Fort Lauderdale, when two cars with women who said they lived in the neighbourhood stopped to inquire about the return of power to their homes - obviously trying to get their attention.

They have now been moved to Miami at the request of Florida Power and Light.

That's more than half of the state.

Workers left last Thursday and arrived in Florida on Saturday.

There are exceptions, FPL vice president and chief communications officer Rob Gould said Tuesday.

The utility also said shutting down the coal-fired plant would have environmental benefits, including a reduction of carbon-dioxide emissions.

"What we're seeing is encouraging, particularly on the west coast where our main transmission structures have not come down", Gould said. FPL said in the proposal that the deal would ultimately save customers an estimated $183 million because of eliminating future costs related to the plant. "It is by far and away the largest in the history of our company".

As Tropical Storm Irma pushed out of Northwest Florida Monday, Gulf Power crews continued to respond to customer outages and planned to join many other utilities to deploy crews to help rebuild and restore power to those areas in the southeast hardest hit by the massive storm. In the three-county region, power has returned to about 73,000 customers in the past 24 hours, according to FPL's data.

Yang at Chinese and Korean New Year festivities in Northcote. "You don't need to write too much about myself", he reportedly said. On Wednesday, Yang admitted he had spent time at both institutions but insisted there had been nothing untoward about his work.

As Irma pushed north, outage figures were increasing at other large utilities, including units of Duke Energy, Southern Co and Emera Inc.

Gould said the bottom line is FPL wants everyone "to be safe and patient".

This was the first time that all the counties in FPL's range had been impacted by Irma, Gould said. The plant's other reactor, Unit 2, continued to operate at full power.

"There is a great expectation that much of the power grid in the south part of [Florida] will have to be rebuilt", said Blair.
