The United Nations Security Council on Monday unanimously approved new sanctions against North Korea in a weakened resolution that won't ban oil imports or an global asset freeze on the government or dictator Kim Jong Un, which the Trump administration had wanted.

The resolution fell short of measures sought by the Trump administration and opposed by Russian Federation and China to ban all oil imports, instead capping Pyongyang's imports of crude oil at the level of the last 12 months and limiting the imports of refined petroleum products to 2 million barrels per year.

Instead, annual crude oil supplies are capped at current levels - China is believed to supply around four million barrels a year through a pipeline, while deliveries of refined oil products such as gasoline and diesel are limited to two million barrels a year.

The UN Security Council agreed late on Monday to a new set of sanctions in response to Pyongyang's latest nuclear test, but stopped short of imposing an oil embargo that had been favoured by the United States. The United States and its allies had pushed for new sanctions to increase pressure on North Korea to agree to negotiations.

Japan and South Korea said after the passage of the US-drafted Security Council resolution they were prepared to apply more pressure if Pyongyang refused to end its aggressive development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

Hurricane Irma looting: Caribbean Chaos as prisoners escape and looters run riot
Of the total US deaths from injuries linked to Irma so far, at least six were in Florida and one was in Georgia. Widespread damage was caused to the Turks and Caicos Islands, but the full extent of it is still unclear.

The number of North Korean labourers who can work overseas would also be restricted, while states could inspect vessels suspected of carrying items prohibited by the sanctions.

Han said North Korea is "ready to use a form of ultimate means" but did not elaborate, the news agency reported.

Ed Royce, the Republican chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, said time was running out and Chinese firms should be given "a choice between doing business with North Korea or the United States".

How advanced is North Korea's nuclear programme? The new measures amounted to "the most stringent U.N. sanctions regime placed on any nation in the 21st century", Johnson said.

Monday's text is the ninth resolution unanimously adopted by the 15-member council since 2006 over North Korea's ballistic missile and nuclear programme.

Another man, in his 50s, was killed just outside Atlanta when a tree fell on his house, Sandy Springs police Sgt. Other forecasts show Irma dumping between 3 and 6 inches of rain in north Georgia on Monday and Tuesday.

He called on anyone aware of efforts to enable North Korean trade to come forward before getting caught, warning: "We are closing in on North Korea's trade representatives".

Joint ventures will be banned and the names of senior North Korean official and three entities were added to a United Nations sanctions blacklist that provides for an assets freeze and a global travel ban.

It followed up with a sixth nuclear test on September 3, its largest to date, which it said was a miniaturized hydrogen bomb.

China's United Nations ambassador, Liu Jieyi, called for a resumption of negotiations "sooner rather than later".
