The UN Security Council unanimously voted this week to increase sanctions on Pyongyang after its sixth and largest nuclear test, although the penalties fell short of the sweeping sanctions the Trump administration had demanded.

Briefing the USA lawmakers, Treasury Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing Marshall Billingslea displayed satellite photos to demonstrate North Korea's deceptive shipping practices.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the sanctions could reduce North Korean annual revenue by $500 million.

Under the measure, countries are authorised to inspect ships suspected of carrying banned North Korean cargo but must first seek the consent of the flag-state.

Russian Federation and China opposed certain conditions in the draft resolutions, opening a new round of negotiations which concluded with a decision to curtail crude oil sales to the Communist state rather than prohibiting it completely.

Existing North Korean account holders could not deposit or remove money from their accounts, the BoC bank teller said.

U.S. officials have also hinted that they are ready to do more.

Royce emphasised that the legislative and administrative tools of reining in Pyongyang and the UN Security Council's resolutions "need to be implemented aggressively".
