WhatsApp co-founder leaves company

Brian Acton, one of the co-founders of WhatsApp is leaving the messaging service company.

"After 8 years at WhatsApp, I have made a decision to move on and start a new chapter in my life", Acton said in a Facebook post early on Wednesday. He added that the next venture by him would include starting of a non-profit organisation, which will serve in the domains of technology and communication. WhatsApp was later in 2014 bought by Facebook for $19 billion in cash and stock. Last week, Facebook said it would soon start charging companies for some of WhatsApp's features as it seeks a path to monetization. "I'll have more to share in the coming months". This decision is, of course, a tough one.

Global Shares Return to Record High
ASIA'S DAY: Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 gained 1.2 percent to finish at 19,776.62, as a weaker yen helped boost sentiment. The single currency dropped 0.41 percent to $1.1984, pulling back from the 2-1/2-year high of $1.2108 hit on Friday.

There was, however, no update on whether Brian is selling all of his stake in Whatsapp and Facebook while resigning or he would continue to own that. In July, Facebook said WhatsApp had reached 1 billion daily active users, but that it will take a few years to start making money from the app.

Acton led engineering internally for WhatsApp, and a source close to the company told Recode he was a big advocate for WhatsApp's adoption of encryption.
