Tropical storms Jose, Katia upgraded to hurricane status

As Katia reached the Mexican Gulf Coast, Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century, walloped Cuba's northern coast.

The Category 3 storm had maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour, and could strengthen on Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center. The western quadrant of the storm was over the east coast state of Veracruz, Mexico.

Father of Plano shooter says family is 'sorry' and living a 'nightmare'
Plano police have identified 32-year-old Spencer James Hight as the gunman who killed eight people at a Plano home Sunday night. One of the victims died after being transported to a local hospital and another person was wounded but survived, police said.

The two people died in Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz state, when mud loosened from a hillside by Katia's rains trapped them in their home, Luis Felipe Puente, head of Mexico's national emergency services, told Reuters. Isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches are possible in northern Veracruz.

Mexico's National Water Commission meteorological authority said Katia picked up strength as it swirled in the Gulf of Mexico 205 kilometers (127 miles) from the major port city of Veracruz. The center of Katia is expected to remain off the shore of Mexico through Friday morning. This rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain. Unlike Harvey, which moved to the north and strengthened rapidly, Katia is expected to stick close to Mexico.

Irma is the largest recorded storm in the Atlantic basin outside of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 185 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center forecasts Katia to make landfall on Saturday, Sept. 9. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 millibars.
