China urges UNSC members to help denuclearize Korean peninsula

The UN Security Council unanimously imposed an eighth set of sanctions on the North Monday, banning it from trading in textiles and restricting its oil imports, which US President Donald Trump said was a prelude to stronger measures.

In the wake of the North Korean test, both the United States and South Korea are highlighting their own military readiness.

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking ahead of a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Tuesday, played down the latest United Nations sanctions, calling them "another very small step".

He said it "was nice to get a 15-to-nothing vote".

The UN Security Council approved the resolution after North Korea on September 3 detonated a hydrogen bomb at a nuclear testing facility.

Sanctions on Kim Jong Un, the Supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and a complete oil import ban were removed from the resolution last minute, supposedly as an attempt to improve terms with Russian Federation and China and gain their support. So for instance, while the USA wanted a total oil embargo, this resolution calls for a cap on oil exports to North Korea, cutting it, Haley says, by about 30 percent. China, supplies most of North Korea's crude oil.

China and Russian Federation do not hide their concern about the USA army's deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system in South Korea, which they view as contributing to the escalation of military tension on the Korean Peninsula.

Washington has said military action remains an option in dealing with Pyongyang and has threatened to cut economic ties with countries that continue to trade with it.

The labour ban would be nearly impossible to police and trade statistics greatly overstated North Korea's earnings from textiles, he said.

The move comes in response to the sixth and largest nuclear test by North Korea on September 3.

Joint ventures will be banned and the names of senior North Korean official and three entities were added to a United Nations sanctions blacklist that provides for an assets freeze and a global travel ban. "We sent a message that anybody who wanted to trade with North Korea, we would consider them not trading with us....if China doesn't follow these sanctions, we will put additional sanctions on them and prevent them from accessing the United States and global dollar system". It stopped short of imposing a full embargo on oil exports to North Korea, most of which come from China.

The sanctions seek to curb key sources of income for Pyongyang, by banning textile exports and money transfers by expatriate North Korean workers. This has resulted in North Korea's oppressed common people enduring starvation and suffering, yet the measures have failed to stop the nation's progress toward developing a nuclear-tipped missile that could soon perhaps make it to the USA mainland. But the detected xenon-133 is a radioactive isotope that does not occur naturally and which has been linked to North Korea's nuclear tests in the past.
