Immediately after learning of the appointment of a special counsel to investigate his campaign ties to Russia, President Donald Trump "humiliated" Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the Oval Office with a tirade of brutal insults, per the New York Times.

Trump's dressing down of Sessions came after White House counsel Don McGahn learned in a phone call during the meeting that Robert Mueller would be appointed special counsel in the Russian Federation probe.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Justice did not have an immediate comment when reached by phone Thursday. The officials did not give the exact location of the surrender nor the current location of the American.

Four people briefed on the meeting reportedly said that during this May meeting in the oval office, Sessions said he would quit, and later issued a resignation letter. Soon after, when Trump was disappointed after an August political rally, he "lashed out" at White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, who "later told other White House staff members that he had never been spoken to like that during 35 years of serving his country". Since Sessions recused himself, Trump charged him with "disloyalty" and a string of insults were unleashed.

Yet after Sessions complied with Trump's demand and submitted a resignation letter, Trump eventually rejected it. It took the lobbying of several close advisers to stop Trump from accepting it. Rosenstein informed McGahn that, bowing to Congressional pressure, he had opted to appoint Mueller special counsel. The tension continued, however, and Trump went on to make his discontent with Sessions public, in tweets last summer that called Sessions "beleaguered" and accused him of taking "a VERY weak position" in the investigations into Hillary Clinton.

Sessions later described Trump's public tirade against him as "hurtful", but added that he meant to remain Attorney General unless Trump "wants to make a change". Less than two weeks after Sessions gleefully got to announce that the Trump administration was ending an Obama-era program shielding certain young immigrants from deportation, Trump signaled he would be working with Democrats to codify that program, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA, into law.
