A USA citizen who defected and fought for the Islamic State in Syria has been captured by the us -backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

An American-born ISIS fighter has been captured in Syria by Kurdish forces, Betsy Woodruff and Spencer Ackerman of The Daily Beast report.

The alliance has taken part in the US -backed air and ground offensive aimed at forcing Islamic State militants out of Raqqah, the group's self-declared capital in Syria.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Justice did not have an immediate comment when reached by phone Thursday.

According to the piece, the USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is predominantly led by the PKK's Syrian affiliate PYD, took him under custody.

Later Thursday, a spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting the terror group in Syria and Iraq said any detainees would be "transported humanely" to the custody or their nation's authorities and referred further questions to the State Department. Earl Brown, told the Daily Beast.

It is not the first time an American has been accused of fighting for ISIS.

Thousands of foreign fighters from around the globe flocked to Iraq and Syria after Islamic State first captured vast parts of the two countries in 2014 and proclaimed an Islamist caliphate.

The officials did not give the exact location of the surrender nor the current location of the American. Mohamed Khweis, 27, originally from Virginia, joined the group and later surrendered to Kurdish authorities in 2016, according to NBC News.
