A judge acquitted Jason Stockley of first-degree murder over the 2011 shooting of 24-year-old Anthony Lamar Smith in the city of St Louis.

Ahead of the acquittal, activists threatened civil disobedience if Jason Stockley were not convicted, including possible efforts to shut down highways.

Barricades went up on August 28 around police headquarters, the courthouse where the trial was held, and other sites of recent or potential protests.

Wilson says he could not be swayed by public outcry or fear of criticism in the case, which reignited racial tensions that erupted after Michael Brown's 2014 death in nearby Ferguson, Missouri.

The officer charged with murder didn't deny saying these words during trial. Stockley says he saw Smith holding a gun before the chase began, and that he felt he was in imminent danger when he opened fire. The probable cause statement said the gun recovered from Smith's auto had Stockley's DNA on it.

Wilson employed sound reasoning, said Bruntrager, who added that Stockley is grateful that "the judge took tremendous effort and pains to make sure that he explained exactly" why he found the former officer not guilty.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner told KMOV she was disappointed by the judge's decision and believed that Smith's death was a premeditated murder."While officer-involved shooting cases are extremely hard to prevail in court, I believe we offered sufficient evident that proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Jason Stockley meant to kill Mr. Smith".

He also said he would be filing a motion in federal court for "a binding of contempt" against the lawyers of the city and the city of St. Louis, which he said was a rare move. Just before he shot Smith, Stockley said, "We're killing this [expletive deleted], don't you know", according to dashboard camera video cited in the trial.

17 percent of Manatee County waiting for power after Irma
More than 3 million people in Florida and Georgia remain without power days after Hurricane Irma unleashed its fury on the states. FPL said on Tuesday it planned to restore power to eastern Florida by this weekend and to western Florida by September 22.

Smith was shot five times - in the neck, upper chest and forearm and twice in his left flank. Stockley's lawyer dismissed the comment as "human emotions" uttered during a risky police pursuit. An officer during the trial stated that no one attempted to render aid to Smith at the scene.

In their initial report, police said Smith was involved in a drug deal behind a fried chicken restaurant north of downtown St. Louis when he took off. A case in OH twice ended with hung juries, and prosecutors have decided not to seek a third trial.

Wells Fargo Advisors, brokerage and investment firm Stifel and Nestle Purina PetCare all sent thousands of employees home and several schools also closed early and postponed events scheduled for Friday. Governor Eric Greitens activated the state's National Guard on Thursday, and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department announced that its officers would be working 12-hour shifts in case of unrest in the aftermath. "A city they don't care about". Protesters chanted as they marched around downtown, at one point reaching police headquarters before moving on. The video is said to show protesters after being sprayed by police.
