5 Dead at Florida Nursing Home that Lost Power During Hurricane

Police say six people died at a Florida nursing home after the facility lost power during Hurricane Irma.

The Florida Health Care Association, the industry group for the state's nursing homes, said it had notified the state about which facilities were without power "so utility companies can prioritize locations with the greatest need". Like many places in South Florida, the nursing home has been without power since being blasted by tropical storm winds with hurricane gusts on the edge of Hurricane Irma.

A state official eventually said they found a generator and gas, but it was not needed: The power turned back on.

The death toll from Irma stood at 81, with several hard-hit Caribbean islands accounting for more than half the fatalities, and officials continued to assess damage inflicted by the second major hurricane to strike the USA mainland this year. Regulations dictate nursing homes and other facilities must have preparation plans in place, but the realities of how older Americans cope with a storm go beyond any piece of paper.

The rehabilitation center is located across the street from Memorial Regional Hospital, the flagship facility of the Memorial Healthcare System and one of the largest hospitals in the state.

The manager of a Florida nursing home where eight people died following Hurricane Irma has a history of health-care fraud accusations. The Associated Press reported that before the deaths at the Hollywood nursing home, Irma was blamed for a combined 19 fatalities in Florida, Georgia and SC.

Hollywood police said in a statement Thursday that state and local authorities are conducting a criminal investigation to determine what led to the patient deaths at The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills. Police evacuated 115 people from the facility, and several are in critical condition at hospitals.

The eight who died ranged in age from 71 to 99, according to the Broward County medical examiner's office.

Crude Bomb Explodes in London Underground, Injuring 22
Police say it was a terrorist incident and is being handled by the Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism unit. A device exploded on a rush-hour train in southwest London early Friday, injuring at least 23 people.

Gail Matillo, president and CEO of the assisted living industry group Florida Argentum, said Wednesday that most of those facilities had their power restored.

Nursing homes in Florida are required by law to file an emergency plan that includes evacuation plans for residents.

Calls to the owner and other officials at the Hollywood home were not immediately returned, but the facility's administrator, Jorge Carballo, said in a statement that it was "cooperating fully with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate and tragic outcome". "I'm saving my money up and moving out of here", she said.

In addition, at least five people died and more than a dozen were treated after breathing carbon monoxide fumes from generators in the Orlando, Miami and Daytona Beach areas. Many stores remain closed because of the lack of electricity, meaning people are converging on the relatively few shops and eateries that are open.
