Florida Utility Says It Could Take Weeks to Restore Power to Parts of the State

United States police have obtained a search warrant in their criminal investigation of the deaths of eight elderly patients exposed to sweltering heat after their Miami-area nursing home was left with little or no air conditioning in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

The order followed the deaths of eight elderly people this week at a sweltering nursing home north of Miami that lost power.

Hollywood police later tweeted that they had evacuated 158 patients to local hospitals.

Three of those who died were in their nineties, including 99-year-old Albertina Vega.

"County medical examiners are responsible for confirming and attributing the deaths that occurred in their counties", Division of Emergency Management spokesman Alberto Moscoso said in an email Monday.

"It's a sad event", Hollywood police chief Tomas Sanchez told a news conference.

Nevada gas prices should stabilize after increases from Hurricane Harvey
Oil prices have been seeing little action as of late, holding just under $50 per barrel for West Texas Intermediate crude oil. But New York, where the average price of gasoline is $2.81 per gallon, still has some of the highest prices in the country.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said on Thursday that more than 38,000 federal personnel are now working to respond to Hurricane Irma, including staff from the military and civilian agencies. "This is a state that I know very well", he reportedly told them. The cause of their deaths has yet to be determined. The deaths of the nursing-home residents have spurred a criminal investigation.

"Mrs. Vega died when she was neglected in the stifling heat inside the nursing home when the air conditioning was known to be inoperable", they said in a press statement obtained by Law Newz.

Even though threats can be grave to seniors staying in facilities in the path of a storm, evacuations also can be deadly.

As patients suffered at the Rehabilitation Center, help wasn't far away: The facility is located across the street from a medical complex that includes the Memorial Regional Hospital - where the center's patients were taken after the scope of the problem became evident. The mayor has sent out an alert to other areas in Florida to conduct a welfare check on all elderly residents because of the heat.

Trump spent the day surveying flood damage and visiting with storm victims in Florida.

The storm - which has claimed more than two dozen lives in the USA - struck southwestern Florida on Sunday morning as a category four hurricane before weakening to a tropical depression on Monday.

Residents were allowed to return throughout the Keys on Sunday, a week after Irma struck. Three days after Hurricane Irma hit Florida, the center still didn't have air conditioning, and it ultimately became the grimmest tragedy in a state already full of them. The walls were gone, and only the pilings holding up the top floor remained.

Without central air conditioning, residents were kept in hallways near the cooling units. And my trousers, my phone, my wallet are all gone.

"I actually think they did a good job", she said.

Officials on the ground say it could take at least one week before the Keys is reconnected with that world.

Hernando County officials said deputies, firefighters and officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission used boats to get to homes along the river to urge residents to get out as the water levels start rising, according to a news release.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was visiting the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla on Wednesday and pledged "absolute commitment" to Britons there.
