Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi addresses the UN General Assembly in New York in 2014

In their first public meeting, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his residence in NY yesterday to discuss the peace process between Palestinians and Israelis. Earlier, el-Sisi met with Mahmoud Abbas and discussed the peace process as well as the reconciliation between the Palestinian factions.

In Israel, where there have been frequent reports of closed-door meetings with Arab leaders, and Mr. Netanyahu himself has touted his expanding contacts with them, the news of a friendly get-together with Sisi created no stir.

Netanyahu had met earlier with US President Donald Trump.

Monday's public sit-down in New York City between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was a manifestation of increasingly close Jerusalem-Cairo ties, an expert on Egyptian politics told The Algemeiner on Tuesday.

Israel and Egypt share a number of regional interests - including the containment of Iran and combating ISIS.

A bland statement from Sissi's office said the talks focused on "resuming negotiations between the Israeli and Palestinian sides to reach a comprehensive solution".

Israel and Egypt signed a 1979 treaty that began with overtures toward peace in 1977.

Sisi hailed the efforts of the U.S. administration to that end, saying that a fair settlement will lead to a new reality in the Middle East where all peoples can live in stability and security and enjoy development. The Egyptian president praised the progress in the relations between Fatah and Hamas and stressed the importance of attaining national Palestinian unity. He also added that Egypt is active in its efforts to advance the process and is trying to bring about a fair agreement.
