The United States has applied financial sanctions against Venezuela, the supplier of 10 percent of the oil it consumes, and Trump said his government is prepared to take additional steps if Maduro continues on a path to authoritarian rule. "We call for the restoration of democracy and all civil rights in Venezuela and we want it to happen soon", said Trump.

US President Donald Trump addresses the 72nd Annual UN General Assembly in NY on September 19, 2017. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza has said the leader is "very busy with regional elections, working on economic matters" and on the controversial new national constituent assembly he assigned to rewrite the country's constitution.

"We have told Trump that military intervention is not on the agenda for any Latin American country", Santos told Bloomberg. In March, there were massive street protests after the Venezuelan Supreme Court, an institution loyal to Maduro, chose to take powers away from the democratically-elected members of congress.

"I urge every country here to prepare to do more to address this incredible and serious crisis".

The statement came after Trump railed against the repressive government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro during a speech before the U.N. General Assembly in NY on Tuesday. "Their country is collapsing", he said.

Venezuela was the key topic at a dinner that Trump attended with the leaders of Colombia, Brazil, Panama and Argentina.

Venezuela's government faced worldwide criticism after a Supreme Court decision in March to gut the opposition-controlled congress, a ruling that was later reversed. Maduro did not mention the food and medicine shortages, the street protest, the Venezuelan exodus or the country's triple-digit inflation.

Maduro faced worldwide condemnation for the methods he has used to neutralize political opponents.

Brazilian President Michel Temer highlighted the Venezuelan exodus in his own speech and declared that, "in South America, there is no longer room for alternatives to democracy".
