Macron and Trump recognized the continuing strength of the U.S. -France alliance from World War I to today.

The most benign reason for a procession is the one Trump wants to emulate, marking a national holiday a la France's Bastille Day. And I think a tremendous thing for France and for the spirit of France.

The improvements "allow us to get out of this level of excessive expenditure" and help bolster France's political weight in Europe, he said.

"Because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July 4th in Washington down Pennsylvania [Avenue]", Trump said. "We're actually looking into it". "I mean, we're going to be showing [off] our military".

Macron told Trump "our people" were proud to have him and First Lady Melania Trump visit on Bastille Day. "I don't know. We're gonna have to try and top it, but we had a lot of planes going over and a lot of military might, and it was really a handsome thing to see".

"It was one of the best parades I've ever seen", Trump said.

Washington already holds quite a few parades, including some with military participation that are held on Memorial Day and July 4.

The president's infatuation with military parades dates back to at least December, when emails obtained by the Huffington Post revealed that his team had explored - and ultimately rejected - the idea of including military vehicles in his inaugural parade. "That military may come marching down Pennsylvania Avenue".

But also, perhaps the military, at least, knows it's a little gauche to have such a martial parade celebrating its own awesomeness at a time when our troops are bogged down in a 16-year war in Afghanistan with no end in sight while also bombing, somewhat indiscriminately, Middle Eastern countries in the fight against ISIS, an act which has resulted in an uptick of civilian deaths this year? Plenty of non-authoritarian states have military parades, including the United States in the past. The parade usually includes military vehicles and flyovers, and Trump was visibly happy during the event.
