Just to give people an idea of what to expect, however, it would seem that Microsoft is borrowing quite a bit from existing programming languages to develop the one it will use for its own quantum computer.

The event started by a keynote from CEO Satya Nadella who eagerly expressed Microsoft's Mixed Reality dreams.

"Through quantum computing, we can unlock solutions to problems in areas such as AI, clean energy, global warming, materials design and much more".

While the hardware engineers are busy trying to come up with these qubits, Microsoft's other researchers are developing programming languages that will be used in creating their quantum computer. The tools will be available to developers for free by year's end.

While it's easy to pick apart some elements of Microsoft's position, frankly, this is the same group of workers that companies who build and sell thin clients have successfully focused on for years.

The tech giant also expanded Microsoft 365 - Office 365, Windows 10, and Enterprise Mobility + Security - to provide a complete, intelligent solution for empowering its customers.

Microsoft also revealed that they even have a research project focused on cryptography and security in a post-quantum world.

New threat protection capabilities that leverage the Microsoft Intelligent Security Graph, including new Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection features to mitigate content phishing, domain spoofing and impersonation; Windows Defender Application Control; the limited preview of Azure Advanced Threat Protection for users; and the integration of Hexadite's AI technology with Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection to automatically help investigate, assess and remediate threats.

The push comes as Microsoft doubles down on Windows 10 S, a stripped version of regular Windows 10, and Microsoft 365, its newly found subscription service model. It's also bringing Skype for Business Online capabilities into Microsoft Teams. Now, any business user familiar with InfoPath forms, Access databases or SharePoint can build apps that extend and automate their business processes with PowerApps and Microsoft Flow.

"Microsoft is infusing AI into our business applications to transform customer care and equip customer support agents with intelligence to best serve their customers' needs", Nadella added. New experiences include Bing for business private preview, which provides a unified view of personalized, contextual search results from inside and outside your organization.

He also said that Microsoft is building systems of intelligence, virtuous cycles and new feedback loops that help create data and refine how you reason over this data to gain insights from information.

Deeper integration between PowerApps, Microsoft Flow and Office 365 and Dynamics 365 will be offered too.

There are improvements to the Azure cloud platform including the availability of SQL Server in Windows, Linux and Docker containers. By bringing the power of Azure CosmosDB, our globally distributed, first-of-its-kind modern database service, to our serverless offering, Azure Functions, developers can achieve new levels of productivity, writing apps with just a few lines of code so they can innovate faster to react to "events" like IoT sensors, database changes and more. These new updates will also make AI developers and data scientists more productive by leveraging the most popular open source frameworks, tools and runtimes.
