Indonesia: 'Imminent' Volcano Eruption Sparks Mass Evacuations in Bali

More than 144,000 people have fled a rumbling volcano on popular tourist island Bali, but officials on Saturday urged evacuees who live outside the immediate danger zone to return home.

Sutopo said Bali's governor has ordered 70,000 people residents from 27 villages within the danger zones to remain at evacuation posts.

The agency said the extra people were placing an undue burden on the almost 500 shelters set up by the government for those whose homes are in the danger zone.

The Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said yesterday that remote satellite sensing had picked up new steam emissions and thermal areas within the crater.

Authorities can use village registration details to identify official evacuees, he said.

Although there are reports of numerous evacuation camps being overburdened, when the Associated Press visited them, everything was peaceful and numerous evacuees were content.

As of Saturday afternoon (9/30) the numbers of evacuees has reached 143,840 people from 471 evacuation points in nine districts/cities.

"This is a temporary shelter so it's not as comfortable as your own house but we are trying to make it as good as we can by providing entertainment, counselors, a school for the children".

Volcanologists say the past week's dramatic escalation in tremors indicates an eruption is more likely than not, but they can not say with certainty when it will happen. Another volcano, Mount Sinabung on Sumatra, has been erupting since 2010.
