Google Unveils Tools to Increase Subscriptions for Publishers

"Google's "first click free" policy in exchange for prominence in its search results was largely loathed by publishers who hated being forced to provide readers free content", said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. After expressing much displeasure about First Click Free, Financial Times gave a positive statement on the new changes.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that the company is investigating whether Russian-linked entities used its ads or services to sway opinion ahead of last year's USA presidential election, following similar moves by Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc. Google and Facebook have the lion's share of digital advertising power, so it makes sense that both companies are now working with publishers, rather than against them. Google and Facebook dominate the internet ad industry, and news organizations are increasingly reliant on those two tech giants for web traffic.

Google drives 10 billion clicks to publishers' websites each month. And they have expanded their control over the distribution of news, even as they have come under scrutiny for their role in spreading untrue articles.

"At this point, it's hard to say how, or how positively, consumers will react to the new policy", said Pund-IT's King. He explained that Google has entered into a revenue-sharing agreement with publishers.

Apple Investigating Reports of iPhone 8 Split Screen Problems
Mashable reports that Apple is now investigating the two incidents, disclosing no such thing has happened in the US or Canada. And a customer in Japan also reported a similar issue with his iPhone 8 Plus which he claims was delivered split open.

With that, Google has introduced a new paywall structured data element for subscription and paywalled content. In Germany, a group of publishers is trying to get USA group to pay for ir content.

"Fake news has prospered on digital platforms which have commodified content and thus enabled bad actors to game the system for commercial or political gain".

Google just a few years ago regularly exchanged barbs with the major publishers of news.

First Click Free has been demonised by publishers for allowing users to circumvent paywalls by going through Google. Google said it is now ending that policy.

Moreover, rumor has it that Google is now working on other tools that also have the objective of increasing the number of user subscriptions. According to Gingras, Google is also looking at ways to use machine learning to help publishers spot likely subscribers and target them with more effective subscription offers.

Now, however, news publishers are able to choose how many free articles, if any, they offer, before requesting payment for a subscription.

News of this received praise amongst unusual places such as News Corp, one of the frequent critics of Google.
