Monarch Airlines stops trading - latest info and your rights

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has said it will bring home more than 100,000 passengers now overseas after Monarch Airlines became the UK's largest ever airline to enter administration.

As a result, 300,000 future bookings with the company have been cancelled, and over 100,000 passengers are currently overseas with return flights to the United Kingdom now grounded.

More than 30 aircraft will bring more than 110,000 holidaymakers back to Britain in the country's largest peacetime repatriation operation following the collapse of low-priced airline Monarch, the government said.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Department for Transport say they are now working to organise the return of 110,000 Monarch customers who are currently overseas.

If you were due to fly with Monarch from the United Kingdom in future, then the CAA won't be providing flights.

KPMG has announced the collapse of Monarch airlines on Monday morning, cancelling all further flights from the UK.

"We are very sorry that we have not been able to turn around the Monarch Group, and for all the inconvenience and distress that this administration will cause customers, employees and the many people who are associated with Monarch", a Greybull spokesman said.

Along with Monarch Airlines, Monarch Holidays, First Aviation, Avro, and Somewhere2stay have also entered administration.

Monarch Airlines, Britain's longest-surviving airline brand, collapsed on Monday stranding tens of thousands of travellers and prompted the countrys biggest-ever peacetime repatriation effort.

"We know that Monarch's decision to stop trading will be very distressing for all of its customers and employees", Andrew Haines, Chief Executive of the CAA, was quoted as saying by Telegraph.

"Some disruption is inevitable in these extraordinary circumstances", the CAA said in another tweet.

What to do if you have booked with Monarch?

Monarch secured a 24-hour extension to its tour operator's licence on Saturday night, but it proved to be a temporary stay of execution amid uncertainty over the airline's finances. "We ask customers to bear with us as we work around the clock to bring everyone home".

Analysts in London said that mounting pressures from costs and the increasingly competitive conditions of the short-haul market of Europe contribute to the airline experiencing losses on a regular basis.

Passengers were then sent text messages informing them flights had been cancelled - but some were already at airports.
