The 78-year-old bridge on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway was blown up at 8 a.m., causing a cloud of gray smoke to cover the ground, according to the New York Post.

All scrap metal recovered from the Kosciuszko Bridge - an estimated 22 million pounds of steel - will be recycled.

This explosion was monitored by the NY governor, Andrew Cuomo, from a boat. Before a crowd of some 100 infrastructure enthusiasts and NY leaders, the decaying bridge crumbled in a matter of minutes.

This morning's explosion occurred just a couple of months after the first stage of demolition, when a 300-foot-long portion of the bridge was lowered by cables onto a pair of barges and carted to a New Jersey recycling center.
