New Zealand 'kingmaker' starts coalition talks with National, Labour

Both National and Labour have met for talks with the Mr Peters as they try to form the next Government

New Zealand has been in limbo after last month's inconclusive election, which saw the governing National Party win a 10-point lead over the centre-left Labour Party, although neither won enough seats to govern alone.

"Today's result lifts Labour's final vote to 37 per cent, and the left block of seats to 54".

"With the Green Party, Labour and New Zealand First combined, there is now a strong mandate for change across our parliament".

The final tally, which included overseas voters and those who voted outside their home constituencies, showed National lost some ground to the Labour-Green bloc, even though it still held the largest number of seats in parliament.

Neither the National party, led by a revitalised Bill English, nor the Labour party, led by Jacinda Ardern, have been in a position to take office after the 23 September election ended in a stalemate.

Harry Kane says England shoulder World Cup expectation together
Jack Butland is a man who will get to show what he can do and put in a strong case to start for England in Russian Federation . Harry Kane insists he won't shoulder expectation alone at next year's World Cup in Russian Federation .

She said the final result meant "we have a strengthened mandate to negotiate and form a durable, stable, coalition government", and the separate talks would be "all about finding what's going to work in the best interests of all parties".

Popular views believed Peters would choose National Party eventually, given the voters' say, though he started negotiations with both sides this week in an insouciant manner.

Negotiations to form the next government will now begin in earnest.

Ms Ghahraman will be New Zealand's first refugee MP, and her election increases the Green Party's caucus to eight MPs.

Although neither English nor the charismatic Labour Party leader Jacinda Ardern have revealed what they are prepared to concede in talks with Peters, English said he was "determined" to lead the next government. "The results released today push us closer towards the change of government that so many New Zealanders want", said Shaw.

Why do Kiwis support NZ First?

In the 120-seat parliament, 61 seats are needed for a ruling majority.

"I don't think it weakens it significantly at all", referring to National's negotiating position.

Ardern, meanwhile, highlighted that most electors had voted for change.

Peters has said he plans to make a decision this week.
