Egypt becomes second African country to qualify for the World Cup

Mohamed Salah sent Egypt to the World Cup finals after the Liverpool winger's injury-time penalty kick secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Congo in Alexandria.

The celebrations were not just contained to the Mediterranean port however.

The win sent hundreds of thousands of fans across the soccer-mad country celebrating, honking auto horns and waving Egypt's red, white and black flags. In Cairo, an army helicopter dropped hundreds of Egyptian flags on thousands of fans gathered at the city's iconic Tahrir square.

The euphoria was intense since Arnold Bouka-Moutou had stunned the hosts when equalising for Congo after 88 minutes.

Hector Cuper's side needed a victory at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria to guarantee qualification from Group E of the CAF qualifiers.

A scoreless first half raised the nerves in Alexandria but Salah's first of the night put one Egyptian foot in Russian Federation.

The Egyptians become the second African team to reach the finals after Nigeria made it through on Saturday, with the continent's remaining three places to be decided in November.

However, the Pharaohs were awarded a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
