He tossed 242 touchdowns, leading the league three times, in 1955, 1962 and 1963. Under coach Bernie Moore, LSU had employed a single-wing attack, but that called for a tailback who could run and pass. Tittle was strictly a passer, and that turned the Tigers into a T-formation team with a modern concept of the quarterback position. He was selected in the first round of the 1948 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Colts. In 1957, Tittle led the NFL with 176 pass completions, which nearly seems absurd when you realize that only one other player in the league that year completed more than 140 passes. Statistically, his best seasons came in 1962 and 1963 with the New York Giants when Tittle threw for over 3,000 yards and 30-or-more touchdowns in each of the two seasons.

Tittle had memory problems later in life related to dementia.

Tittle completed the 1962 season with 32 touchdown passes, and afterward lined that up with 36 touchdown goes in 1963, making him the primary quarterback in National Football League history to toss at least 30 TD passes two seasons consecutively. Tittle actually told ESPN.com recently that he wasn't a huge fan of the photo.

Tittle retired following the 1964 season with 28,339 yards passing, 212 touchdowns and 221 interceptions. Both numbers have stood the test of time.
