A Danish inventor has admitted dismembering a Swedish journalist and dumping her body parts in the sea, but insists he did not kill her. He says that Wall died from carbon monoxide poisoning inside the submarine while he was sitting on the submarine's deck.

But after her head was recovered, police said an autopsy showed "no sign of fracture on the skull and there isn't any sign of other blunt violence to the skull" - contradicting Madsen's version.

Wall's torso was found on a southern Copenhagen coast in late August, and her head, legs and clothes were found at sea this month. He denies all charges.

"Kim Wall had suffered 14 stabs in and around the genitals and it is due to these stabs that we have said that there must have been a sexual motive", police spokesman Jens Moller Jensen told journalists in Copenhagen on Monday.

Investigators found a hard disk in Madsen's workshop that contained fetish films in which women were tortured, decapitated and burned alive.

On August 23, police identified a headless female torso that washed ashore in Copenhagen as Wall's.

Peter Madsen is charged with murdering the 30-year-old freelance journalist, CNN reported. Madsen said the hard drive did not belong to him, according to the BBC.

Wall, who was 30 when she died, wrote prolifically from all over the world in publications such as The New York Times, Harper's Magazine and The Atlantic.

A report from the Reuters news agency of the earlier court hearing said that Madsen gave a vivid account of his story, saying: "I lose my foothold and the hatch shuts".

The police would now gather additional information from coroners and submarine experts from the Danish defence command.

Police have finished an unsuccessful search for the phones of Madsen and Wall in the past weeks but said they are mulling reactivating that search if needed.

Police said Monday that Madsen has voluntarily agreed to remain in custody through November 15, which means there is no need to conduct a hearing tomorrow, as originally scheduled.

At the time of her disappearance, she was believed to be working on a feature story about Madsen, an eccentric, well-known figure in Denmark.

Under the Danish legal system, formal charges will be pressed against Madsen once the investigation has been completed, shortly before the trial.
