Qualcomm sues Apple for breach of software license contract

Apple looking beyond Qualcomm for smartphone components

According to Qualcomm, Apple representatives in July requested "highly confidential" information about how the units work with an unidentified wireless carrier's network.

Perhaps not coincidentally, Qualcomm's lawsuit follows hot on the heels of a report that Apple is considering to drop its modems entirely. Qualcomm has countered that Apple, one of its largest customers, has lied to regulators in an unfair attempt to bully it into charging less.

Rasesh Shah claimed that Qualcomm lied to shareholders when it told them that, "unlike some other companies in the industry that hold back certain key technologies", Qualcomm offers its "entire patent portfolio for use in cellular subscriber devices and cell infrastructure equipment".

Asia slips in gender equality ranking
Saudi Arabia has actually made the most progress in terms of female economic participation since the report began in 2006. The U.S. saw its ranking drop from 45th last year to 49th this year, mostly due to a lack of women in U.S. politics.

It's already attempted to in the past, as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus carried both Intel and Qualcomm chips, as did this year's iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Qualcomm believes Apple could have given Intel access to the proprietary software to help with its own chip development.

In another instance, Qualcomm alleged that an Apple engineer working on a competing chip asked an Apple engineer working with Qualcomm to get technical information from Qualcomm.

The latest lawsuit, which was filed in California state court, comes days after Bloomberg had reported that Apple is designing the latest iPhones and iPads without Qualcomm parts.

US Sets Final Tariffs for Canadian Softwood Lumber
These duties are a tax on American middle-class families too, whose homes, renovations and repairs will only be more expensive. Top Canadian officials called the tariffs "unfair, unwarranted and deeply troubling" and asked for them to be reversed.

Apple reportedly has until June to make its decision, although that's a bit late in the game, considering that the Cupertino company usually announces its new iPhones in September.

In Qualcomm's earnings report yesterday, the chipmaker revealed that full-year QTL segment sales had fallen 16% due to Apple and another unnamed licensee withholding royalty payments.
