On Friday, New Zealand's new Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, renewed her predecessor John Key's offer to resettle 150 asylum seekers now in Australia's offshore detention centres.

The Manus Island camp, set up to hold and process asylum-seekers under Australia's harsh immigration policy, was officially closed Tuesday after it was ruled unconstitutional by PNG's Supreme Court.

In a series of tweets, Boochani described deplorable conditions, saying the refugees had resorted to digging holes to try to find water to drink. They include Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, Afghans, Iranians, Sri Lankans and other nationalities, and are nearly entirely men.

The units have been built by Australia in the PNG community of Lorengau.

New Zealand, which takes a total of 750 refugees a year, made an initial resettlement offer under John Key's Government in 2013 to the then Labor Gillard government.

"We are concerned by events in the past week at Australia's offshore Regional Processing Centre on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea where refugees and asylum seekers are holding out after the Australian Government's decision to close the facility and pull out its support staff", Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a news conference in Geneva on Friday. "They force us to starve".

"I acknowledge that, while New Zealand has not had to contend with these issues on our shores, it's hard to ignore the human face of this situation and nor should it be ignored", wrote Ardern. "You can't keep political hostages". Australia is steadfastly refusing to accept the refugees, while New Zealand has offered to resettle some of them.
