Brits set for £142m windfall as broadband firms are forced to pay automatic compensation

Brits set for £142m windfall as broadband firms are forced to pay automatic compensation

Ofcom says compensation is now only paid out for around one in seven broadband or landline problems, and at the moment customers who are given compensation only receive an average £3.69 a day for loss of service, and £2.39 a day for delayed installations.

Although random internet outages are now not covered by the scheme, if broadband is down for more than two days, customers will get £8 per day that internet remains unavailable.

However, while customers will welcome the introduction of this new scheme.

If an engineer schedules an appointment and doesn't turn up, or doesn't give at least 24 hours notice, customers will get £25 compensation for every missed appointment.

Supreme Court dismisses plea against release of 'Padmavati'
The matter was heard by a Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices DY Chandrachud and AM Khanwilkar . The Karni Sena, had warned the director of terrible consequences on showing distorted historical facts.

Broadband and landline customers with the biggest broadband providers, including BT, Sky and TalkTalk, will be compensated automatically when when service is disrupted and providers fail to resolve problems.

Cable consumer telecoms analyst Dan Howdle said: "This should be viewed more as a way to force providers to spend money improving service-levels across the next 15 months (when these measures will finally be implemented) so these problems do not occur in the first place - to vastly increase the cost of their failure".

But given the current amount of compensation paid is just £16 million a year, it should still be a real boost for broadband and home phone users.

"Waiting too long for your landline or broadband to be fixed is frustrating enough, without having to fight for compensation", said Ofcom consumer group director Lindsey Fussell. But the good news for the sad disconnected people of the near future is that automatic compensation payments for interrupted services or delayed repairs are coming.

Alibaba Singles' Day sales race past $ 10 bn in first hour
Alibaba has championed the shopping holiday and, this year, pulled in $12 billion in just the first two hours. However, there is some doubt about the scale of the Singles' Day sales.

"So providers will have to pay money back automatically, whenever repairs or installations don't happen on time, or an engineer doesn't turn up".

She added: "People will get the money they deserve, while providers will want to work harder to improve their service". Gillian Guy, chief executive of the organisation, said Citizens Advice will be "looking closely" at Ofcom's full review of the scheme after 12 months to ensure it works for consumers.

This automatic compensation scheme for ISPs/telecom providers will take a while to get up and running though. Oxfam said it was also working to lower charges and fine more telecoms for poor behaviour.
