The gender pay gap has been highlighted by numerous high profile BBC presenters today, including Mishal Husain and Jo Whiley, who have been photographed wearing t-shirts and holding signs featuring the equals symbol. This can in no way be used to gauge whether women are receiving equal pay for equal work.

The date has remained the same for the last three years, which the Fawcett Society says shows the lack of progress on tackling the gap, and that it will take another 100 years to gain equal pay at the current rate.

An earlier equal pay campaign from WEP and Now created a visually arresting outdoor campaign for the Women's Equality Party and Liverpool Metro Mayoral candidate Tabitha Morton.

"We have secured a commitment from the BBC to address the cases that NUJ members have brought forward - we are clear that in the course of pursuing these cases, industrially or through litigation, that we will not tolerate inequality and unequal pay".

The pay gap for women in their 20s has grown from 1.1% in 2011 to 5.5% this year, it says.

The Fawcett Society, which campaigns for women's rights, issued the warning as it dubbed Friday Equal Pay Day - saying it marked the time in the calendar year when women start to work for free due to their pay lag on male earnings. It is highest in London, at 20.7 per cent, followed by the South East region at 16.3 per cent.

While the mean pay gap for full-time employees has remained static, the median gap decreased to 9.1 per cent in 2017 from 9.4 per cent the previous year, according to ONS data. Across the board, women are nearly twice as likely (1.8 times more likely) to receive the lowest pay - with 221,000 women earning less than the statutory minimum wage, 100,000 more women than men. As it happens, Northern Ireland is the only region with a negative pay gap: -3.4 per cent.

But even without a thorough breakdown of evidence, young women in the United Kingdom have every reason to believe that they will receive equal pay; the gender pay gap from women aged 22-39 is negligible.

Correct - If there are pay discrepancies that can not be objectively justified, then they must be corrected and the causes addressed to avoid a gap reopening.

They also found the problem doesn't just apply to low-paid workers, as even university graduates across full and part-time work face a pay gap of 23%.

The Government need to do much more to foster a flexible working culture in our workplaces - the default model needs to be all jobs are flexible working jobs unless there is a good business reason for them not to be.
