Evra banned for rest of the season by UEFA after Marseille fan kick

Patrice Evra's time as a Marseille player is up.

"He played an important role to give a new start to the team, the significant improvement of its results and new, high sporting ambitions".

Marseille, who opened their own internal investigation into the incident, said in a statement shortly after UEFA's announcement that they have ended Evra's contract with "immediate effect".

"In that context, the conditions were no longer right for Patrice Evra to accomplish his mission here with serenity or, above all, effectively". Both parties agreed and made a decision to discontinue their collaboration by mutual agreement.

"There's a lot of sadness today. First of all for Patrice Evra, who has obviously understood all the consequences of his act and that he can no longer fulfil his passion (of playing) for Marseille", club president Jacques-Henri Eyraud said.

"For Marseille fans then, who are stigmatised because of the irresponsible behaviour of a handful of them".

In addition, the Ligue 1 club has also been fined a sum of €25,000, and reportedly "ordered to contact Vitoria SC within 30 days for the settlement of the damages caused by its supporters". Guimaraes was also fined €5,000 for a pitch invasion.

Evra was quickly pulled away by his team-mates but sneaked around the group of players and executed a kung-fu style kick on an unsuspecting supporter.
