Supreme Court rejects plea seeking stay on Padmavati release



While yesterday we had reported how the Karni Sena had issued threats to the theatre owners in Rajasthan against screening the film, today, the Home Minister of the state has assured that the release of the film will not be jeopardised.

The Supreme Court has refused to ban Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming epic "Padmavati".

The film is scheduled to release on December 1 and stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in the lead.

Earlier in January, Bhansali was attacked and the film's set was vandalised while it was being shot in Rajasthan. As the film's release approaches, the controversies have got a new lease of life. Seems like the fate of the film now lies in the hands, or rather the scissors, of the Censor Board.

The court said there were several guidelines for the CBFC to grant certification to a movie and, in addition, there was the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal to examine grievances over a film.

The plea said the war saga was based on the 13th-century battle between Maharaja Ratan Singh and his army of Mewar and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi.

The matter was heard by a Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices DY Chandrachud and AM Khanwilkar. "The queens never used to do ghoomar and the thumkas (hip movement) themselves and the revelation of skin by actress Deepika Padukone, in her portrayal of Padmavati, has hurt the sentiments of the Rajput community".

The petitioner Kamta Prasad Singhal had pleaded that under the Sati (Prevention) Act, the practice was banned and even its propagation was banned and made punishable.

Declining to go into the merits of the matter, the bench said the petitioner has another forum where he could appeal for his grievance.
