Bill Gates has today announced a $50 million investment into the Dementia Discovery Fund, motivated by personal experience of Alzheimer's disease in his family.

Years have been spent in trying to find treatments for Alzheimer's, but so far, there have been no effective therapies to halt the progression of the disease. Enter a turning point in the fight against Alzheimer's, for not only will the Gates money help lead to new, better research, but it will act as an enduring symbol of the global need as public health shapes its priorities in an era of aging populations.

As usual, Bill Gates gets it - that the megatrend of population aging in many ways brought about by the 20th-century miracles of good and widespread hygiene, modern innovative medicines, and broad-based healthier lifestyles - must now in our 21st century be joined by what Mr. Gates himself calls the next "frontier where we can dramatically improve human life".

"I hope that in the next 10 years that we have some powerful drugs, but it's possible that won't be achieved".

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia.

The DDF, which was launched in 2015 and involves drugmakers GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly, Pfizer and Biogen Idec as well as the United Kingdom government, has already invested in at least nine start-up companies investigating potential ways to stop or reverse the biological processes that lead to dementia. He plans to invest at least another $50 million into other startups that are working on "less mainstream" approaches, but these have not yet been identified.

The investment comes personally from Gates, not through his charity organization, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Reuters reports.

In a statement, Mr Gates said men in his family have suffered from Alzheimer's, adding that he is hopeful that in time Alzheimer's could be a chronic condition treatable with medication. This would make it easier for researchers to look for patterns and identify new pathways for treatment, he said.
