According to The Huffington Post, the Federal Bureau of Investigation report is the most complete information on hate crimes in the divisive election year 2016, and supports data from the Southern Poverty Law Center, which documented a wave of such events in months after elections.

Of the hate crimes reported in South Dakota, six were based on a victim's race or ethnicity, five were based on sexual orientation and three were based on a victim's disability.

Note: "Anti-Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander" hate crime attacks were not included in this report as the numbers were too small to be statistically significant.

The yearly report is the most comprehensive accounting of hate crimes in the U.S. But authorities have long warned it is incomplete, in part because it is based on voluntary reporting by police agencies across the country. The two largest percentages of hate crime incidents took place in or near residences (27.3 percent) and on or near some type of roadway (18.4 percent). A number of these reports have turned out to be false. Crimes motivated by anti-Hispanic bias increased from 299 to 344 incidents during that time, anti-Native American bias increased from 131 to 154 incidents, and anti-Arab bias increased from 37 to 51. Anti-white incidents increased from 613 incidents in 2015 to 720 incidents in 2016. Crimes motivated by anti-Asian bias remained even.

Of those crimes previous year, 25 were motivated by race, two by religion, and 12 by sexual orientation. Hate incidents increased from 203 in 2015 to 285 in 2016. Anti-Jewish hate crimes, anti-Islamic hate crimes, and anti-Catholic hate crimes all saw various increases in 2016.

Hate crimes happened in a variety of locations.
