Canadian commercial aircraft manufacturer Bombardier on Tuesday announced a deal for 12 CS300 aircraft with EgyptAir at an estimated cost of $1.1 billion (Dh4 billion). The aircraft are to be powered by Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofans (GTF).

The Egypt flag carrier is not the first CSeries customer in the Middle East, but it hopes to be the first operator.

Last month, Airbus agreed to take a majority stake in the C-Series project.

Bombardier is in the process of axing 280 jobs at its factories in the North, and the group is still fighting a ruling from the US Commerce Department that could see import duties of 300 per cent imposed on every CSeries aircraft sold in the US.

The Journal reports that Nintendo and Illumination, which is owned by Universal Pictures, have been in talks for more than a year. The report also reveals that, after negotiating for almost a year, the parties are close to reaching a deal with Nintendo .

Bombardier CEO Alain Bellemare told analysts two weeks ago that he expected sales of the C Series would accelerate following the deal with Airbus.

In Dubai, Ethiopian Airlines' chief executive said he would decide next year whether to buy CSeries or Brazil-based Embraer's E-jet series as a replacement for its Boeing's 737-7. The jet, the larger of two C Series versions, can carry 130 to 160 passengers. Swiss and Air Baltic, which began flying the CS300 in December, have reported better-than-expected fuel efficiency, which is key to the jet's appeal. Airbus has also been in talks to secure a commitment from the carrier, the people said.
