According to the New York Times, the owners who make-up the NFL's Compensation Committee, have sent Jerry Jones a cease-and-desist letter telling him to stop his efforts to block Commissioner Roger Goodell's contract extension. "We do not intend to publicly comment on our discussions".

If the Commissioner believes the available sanction (a $500,000 fine) is "not adequate or sufficient", the Commissioner may refer the issue to the NFL's Executive Committee, which has the power to compel "c$3 ancellation or forfeiture of the franchise in the League of any member club involved or implicated", with a directive to sell the team.

The warning to Jones, which was issued by the six owners on the NFL compensation committee after the group held a conference call Monday, comes less than two weeks after he threatened to sue the league and the owners on the committee who have been working for months on a new contract for Goodell.

ESPN reported on Sunday that Goodell was seeking a $50 million per year contract extension.

Jones also responded to the report that he may be ousted as owner of the Dallas Cowboys by a so-called "nuclear option" from his fellow owners.

"He's served about 60 percent, roughly, 65 percent of this contract", Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday.

Once a strong advocate of Goodell, Jones apparently soured on the commissioner after he suspended Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott six games for violating the league's personal conduct policy relating to his domestic abuse allegations.

Jones denies the notion, but some owners question that because Jones was on board with Goodell's new deal as recently as August, before the Elliott suspension was handed down.
