Several reports on the matter have surfaced this morning, including one from the Financial Times (shared by CNET) that cites a number of Chinese high school students who've come forward to back the claim.

The "Foxconn City" park outside of Shenzhen came under worldwide scrutiny in 2010 after media reports about 18 suicide attempts and 14 deaths that year.

Interns at a factory operated by Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., part of Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group, worked voluntarily and received benefits, though worked longer days than Chinese law permits, Apple said in a statement.

The spokesperson said Foxconn would work with local governments and vocational schools to organize its internship program.

The Financial Times reported that an 18-year-old student called Ms Yang, who is planning to become a train attendant, said: "We are being forced by our school to work here".

The high school refused to comment, and China's education ministry could not be reached by Times reporters. In 2012, another report by the New York Times also detailed poor work conditions at factories overseas, which included explosions at the facilities that make iPhones and iPads. When we found that some students were allowed to work overtime, we took prompt action.
