Argentina says flares seen are unlikely to be from submarine

"Special software is being used to study different sounds and acoustics", navy spokesman Enrique Balbi told reporters in Buenos Aires.

The noise was heard in the South Atlantic about 220 miles (360 kilometers) from the Argentine coast and at a depth of about 650 feet (200 meters).

The ARA San Juan, boarding 44 crew members, was returning from a routine mission.

The German-built submarine was around halfway through its journey from southern Argentina to its base in the port of Mar del Plata when it disappeared on Wednesday.

The search area, off the Patagonia coast, is notorious for strong storms.

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe resigns
Mugabe had faced growing pressure to resign since last week, when the military took over state institutions and the ruling ZANU-PF party called on him to step aside.

Authorities were investigating white flares spotted in the South Atlantic overnight, as urgency grew on Tuesday in the search for a missing Argentine navy submarine amid worry that its 44 crew members could be running out of oxygen.

As the clock is ticking, Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, among other nations, have all sent either ships or planes to help with the search. Authorities have mainly been scanning the sea from the sky, as storms have made it hard for boats.

The malfunction did not necessarily cause an emergency, Galeazzi added.

The submarine was en route from Ushuaia in Argentina's extreme south to its base in Mar del Plata when it transmitted its last location on November 15.

"A warship has a lot of backup systems, to allow it to move from one to another when there is a breakdown", Galeazzi said. A U.S. Navy aircraft joined the search Saturday.

Terror designation a way to hike North Korea pressure
House of Representatives had sent a letter to the State Department calling for North Korea's re-designation on the terror list. Earlier this month, another North Korean media outlet said Mr Trump was " sentenced to death " for his attacks on Mr Kim.

Argentina's President Mauricio Macri spoke on Tuesday about the missing vessel, sending "a strong affection" to the relatives of those lost. "We continue to deploy all available national and global resources", to find the submarine, Macri tweeted.

Speaking at a forum on open government in Buenos Aires, Argentina's President Mauricio Macri said that "in these hard hours, I did not want to start without sending once again all my support to the families of the crew of the ARA San Juan submarine".

The navy also announced on Monday that seven signals picked up at the weekend were not from the missing submarine's satellite phone. After that, he said, it would have to surface or get near the surface to replenish air supply.

On Sunday, search units were largely relying on information gathered from a British polar exploration vessel, the HMS Protector, which was equipped with an underwater search probe and was following the path taken by the submarine, the ARA San Juan.
