Peace talks begin in Geneva to end the civil war in Syria

Geneva peace talks may start without Syrian regime

The Syrian government delegation has arrived in Geneva, Switzerland to attend a new round of talks brokered by the United Nations between the government and the opposition that will continue until December 2.

Damascus had initially refused to confirm it would attend the talks, which began on Tuesday, given the rebels were maintaining their hardline stance on the president's removal.

But the United Nations announced that government negotiators would arrive on November 29 - reportedly after securing key concessions, including keeping the Assad issue off the table. With the help of Russian military support, the Syrian regime has made major advances against its opponents in the past two years, seizing back large chunks of the country.

The argument over the point of death sentence was concluded by defence lawyer and special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. When the sentence was read out on Wednesday, the three accused were speechless.

The negotiations have achieved little in the seven previous rounds but there are hopes the latest may make some progress in ending the more-than-six-year conflict.

They told the envoy they remained ready for face-to-face talks with the government.

Yahya Aridi, a spokesman for the opposition Syrian National Commission told Asharq Al-Awsat that the regime was now left with no other choice than to accept the political operation and to get seriously involved in it, adding that Damascus "is totally convinced that the military and security solutions it followed, have proved to be a big failure". Syrian opposition representatives also called for direct negotiations in Geneva with representatives of the Assad government.

The eve, de Mistura said these dialogues will be a decisive point for the peace process in the Middle East nation.
