Rick Pitino seeks nearly $40 million in lawsuit against University of Louisville

Rick Pitino is on the warpath.

Former Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino sued the university's Athletic Association for $37.6 million, claiming his contract was breached and that he was sacked with no justified cause.

Citing that investigation, a sex scandal involving the men's basketball team and a marred reputation, the university unanimously fired Pitino Oct. 16.

The lawsuit, against the University of Louisville Athletic Association, seeks liquidated damages of $4.307 million per year through 2026, the length of Pitino's contract that was terminated in October.

According to the Courier-Journal, Pitino is seeking $38.7 million in the suit that was filed on Thursday - an astronomical figure that represents the full unpaid balance of his contract to coach Louisville.

A federal indictment suggests Pitino knew of the bribe to Bowen, though Pitino is not specifically named in the indictment.
