Tiger Woods has finished the first round of his return to professional golf at the Hero World Challenge after 301 days away. Making his first start since a mid-tournament WD (Dubai Desert Classic) in February, there were plenty of questions marks entering the week. "It was fun to be out there and be part of a scorecard again".

It is the latest in a string of comebacks for world No.1199 Woods, who had spinal fusion surgery in April - his fourth back operation in three years.

"I didn't know what I could do".

A birdie chance from similar range went begging on the par-3 second, but Woods moved into red figures in style on the par-5 third, drilling a 2-iron from 260 yards on to the green and two-putting from 45 feet. "I have been playing a lot of holes [at home] but it's different teeing up in a tournament". I had a lot of adrenaline going there. I had to dial it back a bit.

Woods hit several impressive drives and approach shots and made a few lengthy putts but also had the struggles that might be expected: two chunked chip shots, one wild drive that led to a penalty stroke and a few missed opportunities on the greens. He was arrested for driving under the influence in May after being found asleep in his Mercedes-Benz by the side of the road near his home in Florida. So once he was given the go, I think it was exciting for him.

"I was very thankful this morning", he said.

Dogs are smarter than cats
Study leader Professor Suzana Herculano-Houzel admitted she was a "dog person" but insisted that didn't impact her findings. Dog people are gloating this week amid widespread reports that a recent study found dogs to be "smarter" than cats.

"To come out here and score like I did, that was nice". Woods answered them beautifully today and it all started off the tee.
