Apple Fires Back at Qualcomm in Countersuit

In the latest escalation of the almost year-long legal battle, Qualcomm filed three complaints Wednesday in U.S. District Court alleging violations on 16 different Qualcomm patents by Apple, some related to RF transceivers and power-saving measures, some related to multi-touch displays and some related to the innovations of Palm.

Qualcomm's two complaints came on the back of another separate complaint it had filed the day before which accused Apple of infringing a further five patents relating to radio frequency transceivers and image enhancement.

It alleged that Qualcomm's Snapdragon mobile phone chips that power a wide variety of Android-based devices infringe Apple's patents.

The counterclaim which was presented by Apple claims that the Snapdragon 800 and 820 processors from Qualcomm. In addition, Qualcomm is seeking for Apple to stop using those technologies in their devices. Every time Apple sneezes, Qualcomm sues and vice versa. In other words, the AT&T and T-Mobile variants of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X are the phones that Qualcomm wants the court to ban.

Qualcomm on Wednesday sued Apple again, alleging that several iPhones, including 2017 and 2016 models, violate several Qualcomm inventions related to cellular connectivity, power efficiency, and 3D imagery.

Qualcomm has earlier sought a similar ban on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices that are powered by Intel chips as per a complaint with the ITC.

The complex patent dispute between Apple and Qualcomm took another twist this week with three filings being made on Wednesday, November 29. Back in January, Apple filed a $1 billion lawsuit against the chip designer for abusing its taking undue advantage of its market dominance. However, the company refused to comment on three new complaints.

The patents of Apple involve confirming each part of a device's processor draws just the minimum power required, turning off processor parts when they are not required and making wake and sleep functions work better. Qualcomm also claims that Apple is using patented technology in the iPhone's Portrait Mode photo effect. What's more, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the chipmaker has asked the US International Trade Commission to halt imports of iPhone X handsets using modems from Intel. If the processor chip giant had its way, iPhone Xs from these carriers could be banned.
