Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed on Monday by gunmen of Ansar Allah al-Houthi group after the bombing of his home in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.

The Saudi-led coalition on Saturday welcomed Saleh's offer of talks, a move the Huthi-run Al Masirah TV said showed the coalition's "faith" that the former president would reverse alliances.

Unverified footage circulated on social media appeared to a show corpse resembling Saleh, wrapped in a floral-print blanket with a severe head injury.

The Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television said coalition aircraft pounded Houthi outposts in southern Sanaa, but gave no details on casualties.

In a televised interview, Salah also called for resuming relations with Saudi Arabia, if the Saudi-led coalition lifts its blockade of Yemeni ports and air facilities.

The island nation has a reputation as a tax haven in the European Union and has attracted companies and money from outside Europe. In response, Frans Timmermans, vice-president of the commission, urged the authorities to leave "no stone unturned" in the case.

The GPC officials said Saleh was killed south of the capital Sanaa along with the assistant secretary-general of the GPC, Yasser al-Awadi.

Saleh announced the end of his alliance with the Houthis on Saturday.

The mediation effort came as supporters of the 2012-ousted president battled the Houthi militias in Sanaa, until finally Saleh announced that Yemen's parliament, dominated by his party, was the only legitimate power in the country.

"I can hear heavy shelling outside now and know it is too imprecise and too pervasive to guarantee that any of us are safe", she said.

A senior official with Yemen's internationally-recognized government confirmed to The Associated Press that Saleh had been killed, sending video purportedly showing Saleh's body being carried away by a group of armed men chanting, "Allahu akbar".

Mr Saleh ruled Yemen for more than 30 years.

The war has claimed more than 10,000 lives since Saudi Arabia and its allies joined fight in 2015, triggering what the United Nations has described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The Houthis and forces allied to Saleh swept into the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.

Yemen has since been rocked by rebel infighting.

Fierce fighting around Yemen has reportedly killed dozens of people over the weekend (December 2 to 3). Iran supports the Houthis but denies arming them.
