An American financier has been killed in a shark attack while scuba diving off the coast of Costa Rica. The male instructor, who was conscious and in relatively stable condition, told officials that the shark attacked when his group was surfacing at the tail end of the dive in the waters.

Rohina Bhandari died after suffering "strong lacerations" to both legs Thursday while diving near Cocos Island National Park.

The incident has left shockwaves among her friends and relatives in Bengaluru.


Bhandari's friends have been mourning on social media, calling her an adventurer and one of a kind. "She came from a wealthy family and she was always humble", she said.

Rohina Bhandari, 49, was identified by friends as the victim of the shark attack off the coast of Isla del Coco Thursday morning. She was a staple of many charity events in New York City, according to the New York Daily News.

Bhandari's instructor noticed the shark and tried to scare it away, but also was bitten and seriously wounded, USA Today reported. She was part of a group of people diving in the area at the time of the attack, according to multiple press accounts.

The guide, too, suffered leg injuries.

He told La Nacion he believed the shark was a female.

Tiger sharks, which have dark stripes on their body when young, are predators often found around Pacific islands. Speaking to the Washington Post, officials in Costa Rica said that the attack was the "first occurrence of this magnitude" at the park.
