Dallas Sheriff Lupe Valdez to run for governor; announcement today in Austin

In a statement this morning, Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez says she will resign and file for governor at the Texas Democratic Party headquarters in Austin later this morning.

You've heard for years that Democrats think Texas could go "purple" soon.

"Opportunity in Texas ought to be as big as this great state, but it is out of reach for far too many".

Valdez's actions and those of fellow sanctuary sheriff, Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez, led to the creation and passage of Texas' SB4 Sanctuary City Law.

Abbott declined comment, but announced that he'd won the Dallas Police Association Pac's endorsement.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who announced his intentions to seek a second term this summer, grew up in Duncanville; his father was a stockbroker and insurance agent, his mother a homemaker, Brian Sweany noted in a 2013 Texas Monthly story.

Under the Texas Constitution, Valdez is required to step down in order to run for another office. After holding a short press conference, Valdez then thanked several of her supporters in attendance before leaving for a flight back to Dallas. With five days left before the filing deadline, Valdez joins six "little known Democrats" in running for the top spot on the ticket, the Tribune wrote.

Sheriff Lopez threw her hat in the ring Monday morning in what will likely be a lightly contested Democratic Party primary for the governor's slot on the November ballot.

Using a mock dating website called "DHarmony", the search clicks through 10 well-known Democrats who declined to run against Abbott, from U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio to former Houston Mayor Annise Parker and Davis.

He remains popular among social conservatives who drive Texas politics and is steering the state through the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which could become the costliest national disaster cleanup in US history. At the time, Abbott responded by threatening to pull $250 million in criminal justice grants to counties that followed Valdez's lead, though Dallas never lost any funds. The two have already butted heads over the issue of sanctuary cities. Greg Abbott when she announced her department would decide whether to turn over undocumented offenders to federal immigration authorities on a case-by-case basis.
