Three US airlines to restrict certain smart luggage from cargo holds

Three major U.S. airlines have announced new restrictions on"smart luggage because of the fire hazard posed by lithium-ion batteries in cargo holds. The airlines say any such batteries need to be removable

American was the first USA carrier to announce a new policy Friday to require passengers checking smart luggage to remove the lithium ion batteries.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines, Dallas-Fort Worth-based American Airlines and Seattle-based Alaska Airlines, have all released statements prohibiting transport of smart bags with non-removable batteries.

American Airlines spokeswoman Leslie Scott told the Chicago Tribune: 'We wanted to get out ahead of the holiday season given that it's one of the trendy gifts for travelers'.

With the proliferation of powerful lithium-ion batteries, and cases of smartphones and devices overheating in flight, Delta said that previous year it has equipped all aircraft with in-cabin containment bags in the event of a fire on board. Last year, the FAA noted that their testing of plane fire safety showed that "current cargo fire suppression systems can not effectively control a lithium battery fire".

New brush fire sets homes ablaze in Los Angeles' toniest neighborhoods
There were no immediate reports of injuries, but flames were seen approaching several hillside homes amid 25 miles per hour winds. The Thomas Fire in Ventura County has scorched 65,000 acres while the Creek Fire in Los Angeles County had scorched 11,377 acres.

Smart bags are the latest innovation in luggage, with features including Global Positioning System tracking, electronic locks, and the ability to charge devices such as laptops and phones. Most airlines will let passengers use the luggage if the battery is removed, but that may cause the suitcase to lose some features and most bags on the market have non-removable batteries.

In addition, spokespeople for United Continental and Southwest Airlines said both airlines also plan to announce new smart bag policies soon. The rationale is that if a battery were to catch fire, it can more easily be extinguished in the passenger cabin, versus in the cargo hold. Other bags with a motor can be used as personal transportation devices, as stand-up scooters or sit-on vehicles.

If the bag will fly as a checked bag, the battery must be removed and the battery must be carried in the cabin.

But Bluesmart, which says more than 65,000 of its suitcases are being used around the world, said its batteries can not be removed but that its products meet all safety regulations and requirements.

NH schools gear up for Hour of Code
The campaign takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week , which this year is December 4-10. As of the first day of this school year, roughly 940 teachers received Computer Science for All training.

The problem with smart luggage is particularly noteworthy because airlines have been marketing basic economy fares that often don't allow for full-size carry-on luggage, thereby forcing those passengers to check their bags.

What's considered a "smart" bag? The latest regulations propose "tighter requirements than the industry regulators", the company said, and vowed to meet with the airlines "to make sure that your Bluesmart will be exempt from such rulings".

"We are saddened by these latest changes to some airline regulations and feel it is a step back not only for travel technology, but that it also presents an obstacle to streamlining and improving the way we all travel", said a statement from Bluesmart.
